Windows 11 has matured into a fantastic modern operating system and there's never been a better time to move up to the latest OS.

This is the latest version of Windows - it's a media creation tool that can be used to upgrade an existing installation of Windows or create installation media for another PC. Just make your choice after launching the tool and it'll do the rest.

What's new in Windows 11? The latest release brings an improved UI, enhanced dark mode, integrated Android apps right on your desktop, much-improved virtual desktops, upgraded Microsoft Store, Microsoft Teams integration, enhanced security and much more.

Apps now work much more like regular desktop programs. They have minimise, maximise, restore and close buttons, and can be resized (to a degree) and organised however you like.

If you've still lost track of a program in the mass of open windows, a new Task Spaces feature can help. Click its taskbar button and you'll see thumbnails for everything running now, a little like MacOS's Mission Control - just click something to switch to it.

Better still, Task Spaces also supports virtual desktops. Add extra desktops as required and it'll display thumbnails of each one, making it easy to identify whatever you're after and switch to it.

With Windows 11 Home OEM is ideal for building your own PC, getting Windows 11 installed on an old PC (check whether it's Windows 11 compatible, first) or simply starting from scratch or as a Windows operating system for your Intel* Mac either via Boot Camp or as a virtual PC. You could also setup a dual-boot Linux/Windows system, too.

If you're planning to install Windows 11 on your old PC, remember to check it's compatible first, before purchasing.

*M1/M2 Mac users: You cannot use Windows 11 Home on an M1/M2 Mac. Windows 11 Professional is the option you need. See "Options for using Windows 11 with Mac® computers with Apple® M1® and M2™ chips" from Microsoft for more information.

Performance Issues?

Most system performance issues are often a result of other software clashing with your brand new software. For instance, security software can clash with a background process, such as a system maintenance tool or defragmentation software. Another cause of system slowdown, is a result of two software applications performing a similar task. As an example, Windows includes a firewall switched on as a default. Your new security suite is likely to include a firewall. You only need one firewall running. In this example, try turning off your system firewall.

Uninstalling Your New Software

Occasionally you may need to either temporarily or permanently remove your new software.

On a Windows computer, go to the Control Panel and choose Programs and Features. Locate the program within the list, then click it to highlight it. Finally, click the Uninstall button at the top of the list and follow the instructions to remove the program from your PC.

On an Apple Mac computer, using Finder, locate the Applications folder. Within the Applications folder, find the name of the application you wish to remove. Simply drag the icon to your Trash icon in your dock. Empty the Trash to remove the files from your computer.

Still Having Problems?

If you cannot solve your system performance issues or are struggling to remove your software, we advise contacting the software manufacturer. If you placed an order, see the section in the order which states Support options. Alternatively, go to the Contact Us page to contact store support directly.

Pros: question
Cons: question
does this license allow changing language?
software.pcworld.com Reply:
The license won't dictate language change. Windows handles this itself. Yes, you can choose any language within Windows 11.

Pros: Simple Payment and purchase Methology.
Cons: Thumb drive creation a nightmare
I purchased the Windows 11 Home version online using a very old (10+) year- old computer and got my license key for the version but when I tried to use Windows media creation tool to make my thumb drive to install Windows 11 Home on my new build which is brain dead at the moment all I got was a error code. After hours of communication with support which was great their final work around was to track down a friend with a Windows 10 or 11 computer and try to creat the thumb drive with it. Wish I had bought a version that shipped a thumb drive to your house ready to go.

Thanks Robert. Yes, creating the USB on an old old (Windows 7) PC can be tricky as it checks the system to see if it can be upgraded first. But that's nearly always a TLS issue which can be fixed. Or build it on a Windows 10 or 11 PC as you've suggested.
